Caring for our planet
Lumea is Officially Carbon Neutral
In 2021, when Lumea was founded, we made a commitment to care for our planet with the same passion
we care for our patients. Because just as your eyesight is precious, so too is our planet
We set a goal to be carbon neutral by 2023, recognizing the unique challenges of sustainable practices in
health care. We're proud to share we have realized that goal, making Lumea the first carbon neutral
surgical centre in Canada.
Taking action to reduce Lumea's CO2 emissions
We partnered with ClimatePartner to calculate our carbon footprint and set reduction targets. Virtual consultations, carpooling, going paperless, centralizing inventory and using sustainable scrubs are just a few of the ways we reduce our emissions.
Offsetting our patients' surgeries
To thank our patients for trusting us with their vision, we donate on our patients' behalf to offset the emissions of their individual surgeries.
Supporting cleaner cooking practices in India
Some of our waste is not reducible as the use of single-use items is required to protect our patients and prevent infection. To offset the emissions we cannot reduce, we invested in improved cookstoves in Maharashtra, India. This significantly reduces CO2 emissions and indoor air pollution from smoke exposure. It also helps reduce deforestation in the region as it requires less firewood.
