Lumea Sets New Sustainability Benchmark as Canada's First Carbon-Neutral Surgical Centre

TORONTO, ONTARIO, April 19, 2023 – Lumea, a network of eye surgery centres operating in the Greater Toronto Area, has reached a significant milestone by achieving carbon-neutral status for the 2023 calendar year. Lumea is the first surgical centre in Canada to attain carbon-neutral status, and the first one to be verified worldwide by ClimatePartner, setting a new sustainability benchmark in the medical field.

Lumea has achieved carbon-neutral status by implementing sustainable practices within their clinics and offsetting their emissions. As part of their offsetting efforts, Lumea has supported cleaner cooking practices, such as providing households in Maharashtra, India with improved cookstoves. This offset initiative has significantly reduced CO2 emissions and indoor air pollution because it reduces indoor smoke exposure, requires less firewood and helps reduce deforestation in the region.

Lumea has a strong foundation of prioritizing their patients and the planet “We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices in everything we do,” says Dr. Paul Sanghera, refractive surgeon and cofounder of Lumea. “Achieving carbon-neutral status is a significant step forward for us and demonstrates our commitment to creating a more sustainable future.”

The healthcare industry faces unique challenges in achieving carbon neutrality, with the use of disposable single-use items for infection prevention, and transportation emissions for face-to-face consultations and surgeries. However, Lumea has initiated several measures to reduce its environmental impact, including centralizing inventory and purchasing to limit duplication and waste, partnering with affiliated optometrists to coordinate post-operation appointments closer to patients' homes, and aiming to become nearly paperless within 12-18 months.

Lumea collaborated with ClimatePartner to determine its carbon footprint, establish reduction objectives, execute reduction measures, and finance climate projects to offset emissions. ClimatePartner, a reputable third-party organization, independently verified Lumea's carbon-neutral status, confirming that Lumea has met the highest standards for reducing its carbon footprint.

“We are thrilled to be carbon-neutral and make our contribution towards mitigating climate change,” said Dr. Baseer Khan, refractive surgeon and cofounder of Lumea. “As a healthcare provider, we are committed to promoting sustainable practices in the medical field, and we will continue to explore initiatives that support the green movement and uphold our carbon-neutral status in the future.”

Lumea leads the way with revolutionary cataract surgery

TORONTO, ONTARIO, Feb. 20, 2023  – Toronto refractive surgeons and cofounders of Lumea, Dr. Baseer Khan and Dr. Paul Sanghera, are the first ophthalmologists in Canada to offer a revolutionary adjustable cataract surgery. This ground-breaking technology utilizes RxSight’s customizable Light Adjustable Lens® (LAL) technology.

The LAL state-of-the-art technology is the only intraocular lens implant that enables ophthalmologists to customize a patient’s vision after cataract surgery. Prior to the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL), if a patient was unsatisfied with their vision after cataract surgery, their options were to correct the prescription with glasses or undergo additional surgery.

Dr. Paul Sanghera, who recently performed the first surgery said, “The Light Adjustable Lens is a revolutionary technology for cataract surgery patients. People now have the ability to preview and adjust their vision up to three times after lens implantation through a series of office-based light treatment procedures that take only a few minutes.”

LAL is implanted using standard cataract surgery techniques. When the eye has healed after surgery, the patient's ability to see near and far is assessed to determine what type of adjustment must be made to the LAL to provide the desired visual outcome.

“We’re thrilled to be the first surgery centre in Canada to offer this technology to our cataract patients,” said Dr. Baseer Khan. “What’s revolutionary about this system is that although adjustments are made postoperatively, they are not “locked in” immediately. Patients can test-drive different refracts and choose what works best for them.”
