What is Lumea's commitment to sustainability?

Lumea is the first surgical centre in Canada to attain carbon-neutral status, and the first one to be verified worldwide by ClimatePartner. We achieved this significant milestone by implementing sustainable practices within our clinics and offsetting our emissions by financing climate projects, such as providing improved cookstoves in Maharashtra, India. This demonstrates our strong foundation of prioritizing patients and the planet.

Procedures & technology

What range of vision correction options does Lumea offer?

What is the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)?

The Light Adjustable Lens is a revolutionary intraocular lens (IOL) implant and the world’s first implant that can be adjusted after cataract surgery.

This technology, which works like a customizable camera lens, allows surgeons to adjust the lens after implantation. This flexibility allows for the prescription to be fine-tuned to complement your lifestyle by testing your vision in real life before locking it in.

Patients can preview and adjust their vision up to three times through a series of short, office-based light treatments using a Light Delivery Device (LDD).

Why is Lumea recognized for LAL?

Lumea was the first clinic in Canada to introduce the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) technology. We are the most experienced in Canada with this technology. We reached a significant milestone by becoming the first clinic in Canada to successfully implant 1,000 LALs. This expertise includes both the surgical implantation and the intricate post-operative light adjustment process.

What results have been seen with the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)?

In a study of 100 LAL patients:

  • 97% of patients reported binocular distance vision of 20/20 or better.
  • 95% of patients reported a near binocular visual acuity of 20/25 or better when tested at a distance of 40 cm.
  • More than 80% of patients will opt for blended vision during their adjustment assessments and treatments.

How do ICLs differ from IOLs?

Both Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL) and Intraocular Lenses (IOL) are surgical lenses that correct vision by refracting light. Their differences lie in placement, purpose, and surgical approach:

FeatureICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)IOL (Intraocular Lens)
PlacementPositioned behind the iris but in front of the natural lens.Completely replaces the natural lens removed during surgery.
PurposePrimarily for vision correction in younger patients (aged 21–45) who are not candidates for LASIK due to high myopia or thin corneas.Primarily for patients over 45 who have cataracts or presbyopia.
ReversibilityConsidered a reversible option for vision correction.Provides a permanent solution.

Safety, candidacy, & consultation

How do I know if I am a candidate for surgery?

We offer a complimentary consultation to determine if you are a candidate for any of our advanced procedures. Candidacy depends on a comprehensive eye examination that evaluates factors like corneal thickness, intraocular pressure, overall eye health, and severity of refractive errors.

Is laser vision correction safe?

Modern LASIK is one of the most studied and safest elective procedures in all of medicine. At Lumea, every patient undergoes a thorough screening process to ensure they are an ideal candidate, and the vast majority experience excellent vision and satisfaction. Major complications are extremely rare and typically minor or temporary.

Transparency, safety, and patient well-being are always our top priorities. When it comes to eye surgery, informed consent is crucial. Having a thorough, transparent discussion with your surgeon about the health of your retina and any potential risks is a non-negotiable part of the process.

Why am I told not to wear makeup before eye surgery?

No makeup before eye surgery is a must. This practice is essential because it prevents infection from bacteria and ensures a sterile field for the best results.
