Understanding LIPIFLOW

For dry eyes that do not respond to artificial tear use, LIPIFLOW thermal pulsation system is a non-invasive treatment that utilizes heat and massage to clear obstructed glands in the upper and lower eye lids.

Meibomian glands are located in your lids and responsible for producing secretions that keep your tear film healthy. In a dyfunctional state, they can become blocked and the absence of gland secretions can destabilize the tear system. Artificial tears may help with symptoms, but cannot address the root problem which is gland blockage.

LipiFlow is an in-office procedure that uses heat and massage to clear meibomian gland blockages. The system first determines the level of blockage via LipiScan technology. Appropriate candidates then undergo a 12-minute non-invasive procedure, whereby applicators are placed on the lids while the eyes are closed.

Rarely, patients may experience mild discomfort after a treatment, however, most patients find the LipiFlow extremely tolerable. Patients can resume normal activities such as driving immediately following treatment.

Ideal candidates for LipiFlow are those who suffer from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) due to:
